During a Brainspotting session, a therapist helps the client identify a specific issue, emotion, physical sensation, or memory. The therapist then guides the client’s gaze to a particular eye position (“brainspot”) that appears connected to that experience. The client maintains attention on that spot while noticing thoughts, feelings, memories, and bodily sensations that arise.
The theory behind Brainspotting is that it engages deeper brain processes involved in emotion, survival responses, and memory, allowing experiences that may be “stuck” to be processed more fully.
